SEO is a long-term process with great rewards, but the longer you take to optimize your site and create an on going search engine optimization marketing campaign, the more traffic and sales you could be missing out on.

SEO Tips

Today we are going to cover three important tips that will make your SEO campaigns much easier. Follow these tips from the start and you will see greater rewards later on.

1. Buy an Older Site

The bottom line is Google does not trust new sites. Why? Because they don’t like spam and one of the best ways to ensure a site is trustworthy is its age. This is why they have made it very difficult for new sites to get organic traffic quickly, especially if you don’t have many backlinks. Sometimes it can take many months before you see quality search traffic from Google.

One way around this is to buy an established site. By doing so you are gaining years of trust from Google instantly, plus established sites often have lots of search traffic already and maybe even an income stream. The downside is that established sites often cost a lot of money, but if you factor in all the money you would have to spend to build and promote a site to the same level, it could be a great deal if you can afford it.

If you can’t buy an older site start producing and promoting awesome content like crazy and try to get backlinks from trusted sites and social votes from your visitors on sites such as Twitter and Facebook. These links and social signals will be very important towards breaking out of the new site “sandbox” so you can start getting organic search traffic. Remember, quality over quantity and natural is always the best way to go when obtaining links.

2. Do Your Keyword Research

Many webmasters just pick any old keywords they can think of to optimize for, but this is the wrong move. A little keyword research can go a long way into making your site more successful. Every keyword has different search intent and will have different conversion rates for you. Broad keywords like “business cards” tend to have broad search intent and low conversion rates, but high traffic volume. Longtail keywords like “order business cards” have pretty clear intent, convert well, but have low search volume.

Targeting a combination of broad and longtail keywords is a great way to get the best of both worlds. As you attract backlinks for your broad keywords you will also be helping the rankings of your longtail keywords.

The best way to pick out the right keywords to target is to use your current analytics data if available, the Google Keyword Tool, Google Trends and other various keyword tools. You should also check out your competitor’s websites and make a list of all the keywords they are targeting for both SEO and PPC. If they have been targeting the same keywords for a long time, chances are those keywords are working well for them, especially when it comes to pay per click advertising, which is often watched closely.

Another extremely good idea is to run a Google Adwords campaign for your keyword list to see which keywords produce the best return on your investment. You can then take those pay per click keywords and apply them to your search engine optimization campaign. Easy!

3. Build a Brand

The best thing you can do for your business and for your website is to create a strong brand with a clear message and a great product or service. Strong brands naturally get talked about and linked to on the web because people simply love to recommend great things to their family and friends.

The more well-known your brand becomes in your industry, the more natural backlinks and social votes you will get. If you combine proper branding with a solid online marketing plan that includes search engine optimization, you will be cooking up a recipe for success.

Google has been giving a lot of love to strong brands, so if you want those top keyword rankings to come easy, start branding!
