GEVEY Sim Still Works on iOS 5 Beta 2

With the release of iOS 5 Beta 2, Apple blocked the only unlock solution for iPhone 4, GEVEY Sim. GEVEY Sim doesn’t work on factory iOS 5 Beta 2. iOS 5 Beta 2 updates iPhone 4 baseband to 04.11.06 which fixes the 112 exploit used by GEVEY Sim.

But, GEVEY Sim will work with iOS 5 Beta 2 if the baseband is preserved. Currently, GEVEY Sim works on iPhone 4 with basebands 02.10.04, 03.10.01 & 04.10.01. You can preserve the baseband by using Sn0wbreeze 2.8b3. Sn0wbreeze helps to create a custom firmware while preserving the older baseband. Sn0wbreeze 2.8b3 provides tethered jailbreak for iOS 5 Beta 2.

How To Unlock iOS 5 Beta 2?

  1. Download Sn0wbreeze 2.8b3
  2. Get iOS 5 Beta 2 IPSW from Apple’s Developer site
  3. Build Custom firmware using Sn0wbreeze 2.8b3 & iOS 5 Beta 2 IPSW (You can follow Sn0wbreeze tutorial here)
  4. Using iTunes 10.5 Beta 2, update your iPhone 4 to the custom firmware built by Sn0wbreeze
  5. Do not activate your phone with Apple using iTunes
  6. Turn off your iPhone & insert GEVEY sim along with the sim card you intend to use
  7. Turn on the iPhone & wait for one signal bar to appear. Once it does, call 112 and hang up within two seconds
  8. Access the iPhone’s settings and turn on Airplane mode. You’ll get “No SIM card installed” error. Turn off the Airplane mode and wait for the network to appear

Recently, I also tried GEVEY Ultra with iOS 5 Beta 2 with baseband preservation. But it was not able to unlock my iPhone 4. The first generation GEVEY Sim & GEVEY Pro might work with iOS 5 Beta 2 with older basebands.

Hey Mahesh
I was trying this over the weekend. The thing is that after installing the custom firmware from sn0wbreeze, when the phone restarts, the only thing it allows you to do is ‘Slide to activate’. Even if you boot using iBooty, the result is the same. If you don’t do the “Slide” thing it won’t access your Gevey sim and if you do it, you are doomed anyway…
Any suggestions? Have you tried this yourself? Could you post a video or something?
Cheers!
Sid
P.S. i don’t have a dev account so my device UDID is not registered. Could this be the issue?

Siddharth,

If you’ve don’t have your UDID registered, then I suggest you try this method to activate your iPhone 4 on iOS 5 Beta http://pastie.org/2173124

Then carry out the remaining steps.

I have my UDID registered with Apple’s Developer Center & I didn’t try the above method to activate my iPhone 4.. I wasn’t able to get the network on GEVEY Ultra. And as I was short on time, I didn’t try first gen GEVEY Sim with iOS 5 Beta 2. But, many users have reported that GEVEY Sim & GEVEY Pro are working on iOS 5 Beta 2 with preserved baseband. You can go ahead & try!

Hey Mahesh,
I got my UDID registered with a developer. So could you tell me how you were able to get your iPhone activated? Mine is locked to AT&T US network so iTunes asks me to insert a valid SIM card to activate. Please help

You’ll need an AT&T sim card to activate your iPhone. UDID registration is needed to install beta iOS on iPhone. But, to activate the iPhone, you need original AT&T sim card.

Dear Mahesh,

I was using Iphone 4 with ios 4.3.3 and baseband 04.10.03 with gevey sim pro.
but while updating to ios 5 i have upgraded my baseband and ios too but now phone is locked and its not identifying the network.

Please help to unlock the phone.

One more thing, I have asked my relative to bring an Iphone 4S for me, will it work with gevey sim or not.

Mukesh,

You shouldn’t have updated to factory iOS 5. Anyways it’s good that Apple is still signing iOS 4.3.5. Restore to factory iOS 4.3.5 using iTunes.

Then build a custom iOS 5 using sn0wbreeze 2.8b8. That should help you to preserve the baseband & then you can use Gevey.

Mukesh,

And for that iPhone 4S thing. Ask your relative to get a factory unlocked one. Gevey sim won’t work on iPhone 4S because it patches the Gevey exploit. Also if your relative is in US, he won’t be able to get a factory unlocked iPhone 4S before November.

Dear Mahesh,

Please help me. I just updated my iPhone 4 to iOS5 and now it does not recognize the sim. I use the Gevey sim and for it to be activated, I need to access the Settings on the iPhone and perform the necessary actions to activate my sim. Since I can’t access the Settings, I can’t activate the sim. Please help. Thanks.

Kate,

I think you’re stuck at activation screen.

Also, did you update to factory iOS 5 directly via iTunes? This must’ve updated your baseband too. Gevey sim won’t work on iOS 5’s baseband. So now you must restore to iOS 4.3.5 via iTunes directly. Then build a custom firmware via sn0wbreeze. Here’s a tutorial for that.

Yes, I updated using iTunes. Big big mistake. Now I can’t access it. I’m scared that it might not work anymore. Thank you for the tutorial. I’m going to try it now. Hope it works. Thanks a lot
