GEVEY Sim Works on iOS 5 Final Version with Preserved Baseband

by Mahesh Kukreja · 205 comments

in Apple

Apple recently seeded iOS 5 final version to the general public. The update is available via iTunes. Also direct download links are available.

The iOS 5 final version is same as the GM version & hence can be jailbroken with the already available redsn0w &
sn0wbreeze

Gevey sim works on iOS 5 Final

Here are the screenshots showing the proof:

Thanks to @w2no for the screenshots.

How to use Gevey sim on iOS 5?

Note: You must not update to iOS 5 directly from iTunes. You need a custom firmware to preserve iPhone 4 baseband to 04.10.01 or below, so that Gevey can work. Gevey doesn’t work with iOS 5’s baseband.

If you’ve restored to factory iOS 5, go back to iOS 4.3.5. Apple is still signing it!

1. Download iOS 5 IPSW for iPhone 4 (Download links here)

2. Download sn0wbreeze 2.8b8

Note: sn0wbreeze is only for Windows. If you’re on MAC, please wait till iPhone Dev Team releases the updated redsn0w which will support baseband preservation.

3. Build a custom firmware using sn0wbreeze 2.8b8. This custom firmware will preserve the baseband. You need baseband 04.10.01 or below to make Gevey work

4. Restore this custom firmware from iTunes using Shift+Restore

Note: If you get errors 1600, 1604, etc. use iReb to put your iPhone 4 into pwned DFU mode. iReb can be downloaded from ih8sn0w.com

5. After iPhone successfully restores, activate it

6. Switch off the iPhone & insert Gevey sim. Start your iPhone 4

7. You’ll get Gevey Menu after the iPhone boots up. Accept it

8. Wait for up to 10 seconds after accepting till you get No Service

9. Dial 112 & hang up within 2 seconds

10. Go to Settings & turn on Airplane mode. Wait till you get “No sim inserted” message

11. Once you get the message, click Dismiss & turn off the Airplane Mode. You’ll get “Sim failure” message which will automatically get dismissed

12. Then within a few seconds, your iPhone 4 will get the network

Why do you need to hard reset your iPhone to make Gevey work?

Reply

jika October 15, 2011 at 5:47 am

Hi, I followed the instructions and was able to end the process with ibooty. My problem now is how to activate the phone. I’m using a gevey sim as the phone is locked. Not sure how to “hacktivate”. Please help.
Thanks.

Reply

Admin October 15, 2011 at 4:24 pm

You need to hacktivate when you don’t have original carrier’s sim (eg AT&T). You can hacktivate while building a custom iOS 5 using sn0wbreeze. Check the tutorial here to know how to build a custom iOS 5 firmware using sn0wbreeze.

PLEASE HELP!! ADMIN, PLEASE REPLY TO THIS COMMENT:

Please, I followed the steps and encountered no errors. Now, when I turn on my phone, the Gevey menu doesn’t show up. No “cancel or accept”.. It just keeps on searching and gets stuck in the “activating your phone”. How can I get past these steps? Do I need the original AT&T sim to do this? I don’t have it. Is there another option? PLEASE REPLY!

Did you build custom firmware via sn0wbreeze or did you directly update to factory iOS 5 via iTunes?

Hello,

This worked..!! Pretty awesome….right..!!
After so many attempts and trying different things like restarting my pc etc i finally got this to work just the way described in this article.
Now i have my iPhone 4 on iOS 5 BB 02.10.04 unlocked with Gevey Sim.

Thank you so much sir..!!

I used snowbreeze and preserved my BB and changed to iOS 5 and I activated my phone with the AT and T sim. But now, when I try to use Gevey’s sim, the first black screen which shows accept isn’t turning up. Instead, it keeps searching for a while and returns no service. what do i do?

Reply

Admin October 16, 2011 at 12:55 pm

You must dial 112 when it says No Service. It won’t show one signal bar.

Gevey Ultra is a 50-50 chance. It may or may not work. But preserve baseband via sn0wbreeze.

1. Turn off your iPhone. Insert Gevey along with your GSM sim.
2. Boot tethered using iBooty.
3. Wait for Gevey menu to appear. Click Accept. If the menu doesn’t appear go to Settings -> Phone -> Sim Applications and select Instructions. The Gevey menu will appear. Click Accept.
4. Wait for 10-15 seconds till your iPhone shows No Service. Dial 112 & hang up within 2 seconds.
5. Turn on Airplane mode & wait till “No sim installed” message appears.
6. Dismiss the message & turn off Airplane Mode.
7. You’ll get Invalid sim error which will go away automatically.
8. The network will show within few seconds.

Do you think this is because I have a preserved baseband ? Also If i hacktivate it , it still says No Service for AT&T Sim cards.

Hi Admin. I live in Brazil and a friend of mine has just bought an Iphone 4 running ios 4.3.5 on baseband 4.10.1 I want to upgrade to ios 5 preserving firmware to use Gevey in my local GSM carrier.

1) How can I activate it here without “hacktivate” ? I don’t want to jailbreak the phone, to avoid booting untethered everytime I reboot the device.

2) Should I ask him to buy an AT&T SIM card and activate it in the U.S? Would I be able to restore it with custom firmware here, using this SIM?

Thank you so much for your help

Reply

Admin October 22, 2011 at 10:16 am

You can buy AT&T sim from eBay or tell your friend to ship it from US. And then you can activate after upgrading your iPhone to iOS 5.

Reply

Giovanni from Brazil October 22, 2011 at 7:40 pm

Thanks for your answer. Just one more thing: It looks like I need to call AT&T service in the U.S to activate the SIM card. Is it going to work? Even though the SIM will be connected to a Brazilian network?

No you don’t need to call AT&T service. Even if the service on the sim is not active, it’ll activate your iPhone 4.

Thanks for the quick reply. I stupidly skipped the step(which wasn’t a step really) of putting in the sim for the original phone.

Now I’ve encountered another problem. While using Ibooty, I can’t get the Gevey sim to work. Bare with me, as I got it to work the first time I tried (without iBooty)

Gevey doesn’t pop up Accept message, so I went into settings->sim->etc, it pops up. I wait 15 seconds. no service. call 112, hang up after 2 seconds. hit airplane mode, NOTHING happens. it just sits there. Did this about 10 times while adjusting 3g on/off, data roaming on/off. Any suggestions? As it did work the first time without iBooty?

Also, just found this, which to my knowledge is wrong because gevey IS working on a custom firmware, but take a look anyway:

“Custom Firmware issuse:
If your iPhone 4 has custom firmware, the GEVEY Sim adapter will not work. You must restore your iPhone 4 to the original iPhone 4 Firmware.”

That is for Gevey Ultra. Gevey Ultra requires a non custom firmware. But Gevey & Gevey Pro work on custom firmware.

So, how come it is not working?

I can either have a jailbroken phone, and use cydia, WITHOUT gevey working, or, have gevey working, without access to cydia

I’m unable to get both. help please.. I’m about to give u and just use gevey without cydia.

to reiterate and elaborate: When I boot my phone normally, without iBooty, gevey works everytime. When I boot my phone using ibooty, the message won’t pop up(so I go to settings and force it, hit accept, wait for no service/15 seconds, dial 112, turn airplane mode on). when I turn airplane mode on is where it gets stuck, and will not continue with the gevey unlock process.

Admin November 10, 2011 at 12:40 pm

Weird problem. I think you need to restore to custom iOS 5 again & try if that works for you. I’m on custom iOS 5 and both Gevey & Cydia work for me at the same time. I’m on original Gevey sim.

Vic November 10, 2011 at 12:44 pm

AHA! I think I figured it out. When I made the custom firmware, was I supposed to go to General, and check Hacktivate? then click build ipsw, and the arrow?

if so, that’s the issue, and this is probably why it’s not working?

Vic November 10, 2011 at 2:14 pm

Oh my god. It’s working. I have no idea, why or how. But, it’s decided to work. It stopped working for a moment when I disabled cellular network, but turning on 3g solved it.

anyway thanks for holding my hand through this process.

But if you don’t have the original carrier sim, you can use hacktivate option in sn0wbreeze while building a custom firmware. Here’s a tutorial for using sn0wbreeze.

Hi,

If you’re trying to restore to iOS 5.0, then you might be facing the error because Apple released 5.0.1 & has stopped signing 5.0. Now you must create custom iOS 5.0.1. But I recommend you to wait because many users are facing problems while using Gevey on 5.0.1. So stay where you’re now till some confirmations come in.

I am currently on ios 4.3.1 with baseband 4.10.01 unlocked with Gevey.
I have original carrier sim card so I suppose I can upgrade to ios 5 with custom ipsw file without jailbreaking. But before that I have few questions.
1. Do I need to put the phone in DFU mode via sn0wbreeze or creating the custom ipsw file via sn0wbreez is sufficient and then shift + restore on itunes
2. Shall I upgrade to ios 5 or 5.0.1? Apple stopped signing ios 5.0 does that mean it won’t sign any upgrade to ios 5.0 or any downgrade to ios 5.0?
3. Does Gevey works on ios 5.0.1 with baseband preserved 4.10.01?
4. If my phone is not jailbroken, in what circumstances do I need iBooty?

Really appreciate your help..Thanks a lot in advance..

1. I suggest you to use iReb to put your iPhone into Pwned DFU mode to avoid any errors during restore
2. Apple has stopped signing 5.0, so you need to restore to 5.0.1
3. Gevey works on 5.0.1 with preserved baseband
4. If you don’t install Cydia, you don’t need to use iBooty

Hi,

I have an iphone 4.1 with bb 2.10 locked version with AT&T. Currently using gevey sim to work it with Airtel I want to upgrade to 5.0.1 . If i use snowbreeze to upgrade using custom firmware and use expert mode and hactivate option after restore.
Will I need original carrier to activate my phone again or it will be activated after restore, so no original carrier required ?

Kindly help me on this.

No you don’t need original carrier’s sim if you hacktivate.

1 signal bar is not shown in iOS 5. You must dial 112 when it says No Service.

Hi,

Apple has stopped signing iOS 5.0.1. You cannot upgrade to iOS 5.0.1 unless you’ve SHSH blobs of iOS 5.0.1. Apple recently released iOS 5.1. If you don’t have SHSH blobs of iOS 5.0.1, you can upgrade to iOS 5.0.1 & preserve baseband using the latest redsn0w.

Hi,
I know this is a really old post but seemed a relevant place to post my issue.
Since the last couple of weeks my Gevey is giving me trouble. Every now and again I would notice the phone had the error “SIM card not installed” on its screen after which I had to reboot and repeat the accept-112-airplane mode method. This would let me use my phone again, albeit temporarily.
I had been holding back on updating my phone to iOS5 and finally decided to go for it after this issue started causing me headache.
Even after the upgrade, the issue is still there, however I seem to have figured out the reasons behind it. When I turn off the internet(no 3G/wi-fi) the gevey seems to continue working properly(16hrs and running so far) while on wi-fi it used to error out within minutes. With 3G, within the hour. However, without internet, there’s not much use of a smartphone!
I am guessing the phone is checking up with some server to verify that the SIM is legit and when it figures its not, it just disables the SIM. If indeed this is the case then a simple fix might be figuring out what server that is and disabling it via a hosts file entry on the phone. I haven’t managed to find this issue(or its solution) anywhere, but I don’t think mine could be the only case.
Would appreciate if you can give any tips/pointers on this.

No, the hacktivate option must be selected if you don’t have the original carrier’s sim & want to activate the iPhone after restore.

Still not working.

Made a new custom firmware with sn0wbreeze, same issue ๐Ÿ™

if I start up with iBooty, it won’t load gevey automatically, so I go into settings do it myself, hangs on the airplane mode. does it matter what my settings are for 3g/data, network settings?
