GEVEY Sim Works on iOS 5 Final Version with Preserved Baseband

Apple recently seeded iOS 5 final version to the general public. The update is available via iTunes. Also direct download links are available.

The iOS 5 final version is same as the GM version & hence can be jailbroken with the already available redsn0w &
sn0wbreeze

Gevey sim works on iOS 5 Final

Here are the screenshots showing the proof:

Thanks to @w2no for the screenshots.

How to use Gevey sim on iOS 5?

Note: You must not update to iOS 5 directly from iTunes. You need a custom firmware to preserve iPhone 4 baseband to 04.10.01 or below, so that Gevey can work. Gevey doesn’t work with iOS 5’s baseband.

If you’ve restored to factory iOS 5, go back to iOS 4.3.5. Apple is still signing it!

1. Download iOS 5 IPSW for iPhone 4 (Download links here)

2. Download sn0wbreeze 2.8b8

Note: sn0wbreeze is only for Windows. If you’re on MAC, please wait till iPhone Dev Team releases the updated redsn0w which will support baseband preservation.

3. Build a custom firmware using sn0wbreeze 2.8b8. This custom firmware will preserve the baseband. You need baseband 04.10.01 or below to make Gevey work

4. Restore this custom firmware from iTunes using Shift+Restore

Note: If you get errors 1600, 1604, etc. use iReb to put your iPhone 4 into pwned DFU mode. iReb can be downloaded from ih8sn0w.com

5. After iPhone successfully restores, activate it

6. Switch off the iPhone & insert Gevey sim. Start your iPhone 4

7. You’ll get Gevey Menu after the iPhone boots up. Accept it

8. Wait for up to 10 seconds after accepting till you get No Service

9. Dial 112 & hang up within 2 seconds

10. Go to Settings & turn on Airplane mode. Wait till you get “No sim inserted” message

11. Once you get the message, click Dismiss & turn off the Airplane Mode. You’ll get “Sim failure” message which will automatically get dismissed

12. Then within a few seconds, your iPhone 4 will get the network

Did you confirm that it *worked* for you? I followed those exact instructions yesterday, shortly after iOS5’s release and I can’t get Gevey to work or even show the boot up page where you click “Accept”.

N3RVE,

Did you preserve the baseband using sn0wbreeze? Which Gevey version are you using? I’m using the original 1st generation Gevey sim.

If I just choose the option to preserve the Baseband.. Will it still be a tethered boot for Iphone4 .

Reply

Admin October 13, 2011 at 4:11 pm

Nikunj,

The jailbreak for iOS 5 is currently tethered. So you’ll need to use iBooty everytime the iPhone reboots.

nikunj and admin,

if u just choose the option to preserve the Baseband on sn0wbreeze it will do nothing but preserve your baseband. it will not jailbreak. so rebooting will be normal.(untethered). but be sure you have the original carrier sim card to activate your phone then.

Can you confirm that this is working? I’m downloading http://appldnld.apple.com/iPhone4/041-8358.20111012.FFc34/iPhone3,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw
Will this version work?

Thaks!

Federico,

That’s the right IPSW for iPhone 4 iOS 5. But make sure you build custom firmware via sn0wbreeze 2.8b8. This will help you preserve the baseband & Gevey will work for you.

Mahesh, if you are using Gevey sim then u might have hacktivated ur phone, unlike FaceTime, will we be able to use imessage?

Also should I use tinyumberlla to save blobs?

Waiting for ur reply.

Preet Varun Singh,

I have original AT&T micro sim. So I didn’t hacktivate my iPhone. I’m able to use iMessage. You’ll also be able to use it even if you hacktivate.

And save shsh for 4.3.3/4.3.5, in case you need to go back if anything is wrong.

Did you get past 1600 errors? You need original carrier’s sim card to activate your iPhone. If you don’t have original carrier’s sim, you must select hacktivate function in sn0wbreeze while building custom firmware.

Federico October 13, 2011 at 7:24 pm

Now i’m building a new CFW with the hack tivation flag on. let’s see where this goes 🙂 thanks for your support i now i’m terrible

I have a question.. I want to preserve my baseband using snowbreeze without jailbreaking it..what i mean is that i won’t install cydia.. is that possible? and what’s the difference between “baseband preservation mode” and the “expert mode” which one will you recommend? I really just like to preserve my baseaband and don’t care about the jailbreak. is it possible?

Reply

Admin October 13, 2011 at 7:39 pm

DebTym,

Here’s what different modes of sn0wbreeze do:

BASEBAND PRESERVATION MODE: This mode only preserves the iPhone’s baseband. It does not jailbreak or unlock the actual device. All other modes still do preserve the baseband.
SIMPLE MODE: Recommended for people that don’t know what to add. This mode will add Cydia, afc2, SSH for Apple TV and other recommended stuff automatically.
EXPERT MODE: Expert mode let you have all customizing options at your disposal. Such as custom boot logos, root partition size, installer options and unlocks.

So you must select Baseband preservation mode to just preserve the baseband without jailbreaking.

You might get 1600, 1604 errors. Use iReb from ih8sn0w.com to put your iPhone into Pwned DFU mode.

Reply

Federico October 13, 2011 at 8:32 pm

nope it’s not throwing any error. could it be that this firmware is locked so it won’t boot with the hacktivation set ?
cuz the first time it worked perfectly fine

Reply

Admin October 13, 2011 at 8:51 pm

Federico,

No, nothing like that. Build a new custom firmware & try again. And I hope you’re using iReb to put your iPhone into Pwned DFU mode.

Reply

DebTym October 13, 2011 at 8:34 pm

Admin isn’t it if i’m not mistaken DFU mode is what you do before you restore, right? Then how does Pwned DFU mode solve the problem? you are saying? after i do that, what will happen?

Reply

Admin October 13, 2011 at 8:53 pm

DebTym,

With Pwned DFU mode, the iPhone is patched before restoring. This helps to install custom firmwares. In a normal DFU mode, custom firmwares will through errors.

And you need to just preserve baseband. You can do this by just selecting “Baseband Preservation Mode” in sn0wbreeze. That’ll do the work for you. It won’t hacktivate nor install Cydia.

Timmy,

What iOS are you currently on? Is it jailbroken? Does it have Cydia?

If you want to update to iOS 5 & use GEVEY, you must preserve baseband using sn0wbreeze. I recently wrote a tutorial for that here. If you’ve any more questions, feel free to ask.

ZinnyZinZin,

If you preserve the baseband using sn0wbreeze, GEVEY sim will work. Also, while building custom firmware select “Hacktivation” from Expert menu. This will help as you don’t have original AT&T sim, and will let you activate the iPhone.

im using the first gevey sim for TMOBILE in use..

so from what im reading this will work if i create a custom fw with snowbreeze
of 5.0 with a preserved baseband (4.10 in my case)

then use the orriginal at&t sim i got with the phone to activate and re do gevey steps (112)…

am i right?

Once you restore using expert mode and get stuck on the apple logo – get the iPhone into DFU mode and run iBooty.. and walla it boots it by passing the activation.

Hope this works for you.. I’ve already ordered my at&t card off ebay.. darn.

I’m wanting to just upgrade, preserve baseband, and not jailbreak. but still use my Gevey SIM.

I followed all the steps above, had a friend cook me the custom ipsw on his PC, and now i have it on my mac. I tried to do the DFU mode earlier but I messed it up and I think I was in recover mode and scared shitless I had ruined my phone. Finally got it out after hours of searching the internet (using redsn0w) but I don’t know if I should try to install the sn0wbreeze ipsw again or not.

aghh idk what to do! I’m worried that if I somehow mess it up I won’t be able to go back and at the least continue to use my phone in the UK.

And when do you need your original AT&T SIM? I have mine, if I do decide to update should I have it in the whole time? Does it matter that I don’t get service here? I had AT&T temporarily lock my account for the two months I’m abroad so it doesn’t work over here.

Reply

Admin October 14, 2011 at 2:55 pm

Dan,

Put your iPhone into DFU mode using iReb (can be downloaded from ih8sn0w.com).

Then update via iTunes using Shift + restore.

And you need original AT&T sim after the restore is complete to activate the iPhone. It doesn’t matter if the sim doesn’t have service. It is just needed for activation.

Sir can you help me update my girlfriend’s phone.
– iPhone 4 (AT&T locked)
– Lives in the Philippines (AT&T Sim card issues)

My questions are:

1. Can I use the baseband preservation without jailbreaking? Tethered jailbreak + tethered unlock would be awful.
2. I read something about needing the original AT&T Sim Card. While doing these steps, do I need this sim to work? I’m scared that it might not work for activation because we are in the philippines.
3. Which software could I use for saving my SHSH blobs? For my own iPhone 4 which is factory unlocked, I used iFaith and it worked perfectly fine downgrading from iOS 5 betas to iOS 4.3.3.
4. Lastly, is snowbreeze for iOS 5 Final out yet? We are on windows so we cannot use redsnow.

I am concerned about her because she’d freak out when her iPhone would be stucked in a locked iOS 5 if everything fails. lol So i want to be 100% sure that this would work and have the assurance that I can get back to iOS 4.3.3 when it fails. Thanks in advance!

Pan,

Answers to your questions:

1. You can use baseband preservation without jailbreaking.
2. But, your girlfriend doesn’t have an original AT&T sim, or does she? If she doesn’t have, then you need to select “Hacktivate” function from “Expert menu” while building custom firmware.
3. Use TinyUmbrella to save SHSH blobs. A simple Google search will lead you to TinyUmbrella’s website.
4. sn0wbreeze for iOS 5 final is released. But the jailbreak is currently tethered. And redsn0w also works on Windows.

Pan October 14, 2011 at 3:08 pm

Thank you so much for the reply, sir.

2. Yes, my girlfriend has it but we think it’s lost. If I use hacktivate, will I need to jailbreak first? Sorry haven’t used this one ’cause my iPhone is factory unlocked.
3. I tried TinyUmbrella once but there is always a popup window that tells something like “apple must have blah blah blah. dont use this blah blah blah”. I forgot the exact words but because of this, I tried to search for others. Have you tried iFaith?
4. Oh okay, thanks! Last time I saw was Mac only but thanks. 🙂

Thank you again! 🙂

Reply

Admin October 14, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Pan,

2. When you select the option to “hacktivate”, the iPhone will be automatically jailbroken.
3. I don’t know why you get the error message with TinyUmbrella. It always works fine if you’ve latest Java/JRE installed.
4. 😉
