Leveraging the awesome social power of Twitter can be highly effective when it comes to driving traffic to your website. While many attempt to translate Twitter followers into website visitors, few are actually successful. Most people employ a “shoot the moon” technique as far as Twitter followers are concerned, racking up as many fans as possible. That seems to work out well for Ashton Kutcher, but it probably won’t help you very much. Instead, take a more intelligent approach to monetizing Twitter traffic by using the following advice and tips.
Build a Community
Twitter is an excellent platform for community building. The best way to go about this is to find people with similar interests and goals. If you’re trying to promote a website that’s focused on selling Yankees paraphernalia, you won’t get much traffic by following Red Sox fans. Create a virtual tribe of like-minded individuals who will be far more likely to check out your website. Send Direct Messages to prolific Tweeters that you follow, and retweet content that they post.
Promote Yourself Actively and Passively
If nothing else, you should have “Tweet This” widgets on all of your website articles and blog posts so readers can share your work with their Twitter followers. Aside from using submission tools on your site, you should make sure that your website’s URL is clearly visible in your user bio on your Twitter profile. You don’t have to make your website’s name your Twitter handle, as your actual name will do just fine. Just make sure that people know how to find your main web page. If your tweets are interesting and thought provoking, they’ll want to see more of your work.
Subtlety Is a Virtue
While there’s nothing wrong with promoting your website and your content, there is such a thing as going too far. Nothing turns people off more than spam posts that are wildly self-promotional and offer little to the reader other than a trip to your website. Give your followers information they can use, and your selfless efforts will pay big dividends later when they eventually come to view you as an authority and visit your website.
Final Thoughts
In all likelihood, you won’t be massively successful overnight or attract a million viewers right off the bat. As with anything else related to web marketing and E-commerce, success on Twitter is a gradual process that requires time and consistent effort. Dedicate a certain portion of each day to tweeting links, promoting your content, and interacting with your Twitter followers. The importance of joining the conversation on Twitter can’t be stressed enough; if your Twitter account is merely a promotion platform, few people will bother to pay attention to it.
