[How To] Fix Error 1 while Downgrading iOS 4.3.4 to iOS 4.3.3

Update: If you’re facing error 1 while downgrading from iOS 5, check the latter part of the post.

I recently updated to iOS 4.3.4 to test GEVEY Sim on my iPhone 4. Good news is that GEVEY Sim works fine, but I had a hard time coming back to iOS 4.3.3.

I was facing Error 1 in iTunes even though my device was in Pwned DFU Mode. Most of the sites on Google Search for this problem say that your iPhone must be in a DFU Mode. But, my iPhone 4 was already in DFU mode. Inspite of that, I was facing error 1.

Error 1 iTunes

Luckily, I came across JailbreakMovies which has an article telling how to downgrade iOS 5 beta to iOS 4.3.3. It explains the fix for Error 1.

How To Fix Error 1 in iTunes?

I assume that you tried to restore to iOS 4.3.3 from iOS 4.3.4 using saved SHSH blobs. And after about 3/4th restore was complete, you got error 1 in iTunes & the following screen on your iPhone:

Connect to iTunes screen

To fix the error, follow these steps:

1. Download redsn0w 0.9.6rc19 for Windows / MAC

2. Open redsn0w and point it to iOS 4.3.3 IPSW. After redsn0w identifies IPSW file, click Next

3. You’ll be prompted to put your iPhone into Pwned DFU Mode. Follow the instructions on the screen and your iPhone will be in Pwned DFU Mode

4. Jailbreaking process will start on your iPhone once it is in DFU mode

5. After a couple of minutes the jailbreaking process will reach Installing Activation Bundles. Here, your iPhone will be frozen. Wait for a couple of minutes and then you’ll have to reboot by pressing Home + Power buttons

6. After rebooting, your iPhone will again show Connect to iTunes screen. Use TinyUmbrella to kick your device out of recovery

7. Once your iPhone restarts again, it’ll boot normally and it’ll be already jailbroken. You can then activate through iTunes

How To Fix Error 1 while Downgrading from iOS 5?

1. Download latest redns0w

2. Launch Redsn0w and select “Extras”

3. Now select “Recovery Fix”

4. Now your device will be kicked out of recovery and error 1 will be fixed. Your iDevice will now be running iOS 4.3.3/4.3.5. You can then jailbreak iOS 4.3.5 using redsn0w or jailbreak iOS 4.3.3 using jailbreakme.com.

Did you put your iPhone in the DFU mode? You can put your iPhone into DFU mode by:

1. Pressing Home + Power button for 10 seconds
2. After 10 seconds, release the power button but keep holding the home button
3. Continue holding the home button for 15 more seconds or till iTunes pops up a message that “it has found iPhone in recovery mode”

After your iPhone is in DFU mode, restore using Shift + restore. Then try the remaining procedure. If problem persists, reply here.

but when i reset network settings the device is shutting down and than i have to boot it again from redsnow and it dosent work

Reply

You’ll have to boot tethered everytime your iPhone reboots. And are you using gevey ultra?

Reply

Elle July 26, 2011 at 7:49 pm

Yes, I followed the exact steps. I am running at 4.3.4 on my iPhone4 currently and my phone is still stuck at Connect to iTunes screen. I got a 3194 error when I followed the steps in iTunes after I put my phone into DFU mode.

Reply

Admin July 26, 2011 at 8:18 pm

Elle,

To fix error 3194 while restore, follow these steps:

1. Quit iTunes
2. Locate your hosts file, in Mac OS X this is /etc/hosts and in Windows this is c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
3. Open the hosts file with Administrator privileges
4. Add the following lines to the very bottom of the hosts file:
74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
5. Connect your iPhone to the computer
6. Launch iTunes
7. Put the iPhone/iPad/iPod into DFU mode by turning the phone off and then holding down the sleep and power button for 10 seconds, then release the power button but hold onto the home button until iTunes tells you that the device is now in recover mode
8. Use the iTunes Restore feature as usual with the iOS device

Once your iOS update is finished, remove the “74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com” line from your hosts file again so that iTunes can properly update as usual.

yes redsnow 0.9.8b4 and i know i have to reboot it every time
no its gevey sim
the jailbreaking is fine
the gevey sim was perfect with 4.3.4 until i jailbreak it and now
cant use the phone

after i boot the tethered i do everything as 112 and it should work?

thx guys for your help

Reply

Admin July 26, 2011 at 8:21 pm

GOAD,

Even if you boot or don’t boot tethered, GEVEY Sim should work fine by following the 112 procedure.

Reply

GOAD July 26, 2011 at 8:13 pm

even when i reset the network?
to boot again from tethered?

Reply

Elle July 26, 2011 at 8:25 pm

I still get the same error after following your steps.

Reply

Admin July 26, 2011 at 8:29 pm

Elle,

If you properly put “74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com” in hosts file, the error should be gone. Restart your computer and try again!

Reply

Elle July 26, 2011 at 8:39 pm

I already restarted and I even tried TinyUmbrella! But still cannot! Is there no way out? Else I have to restore and update to 4.3.5!

Reply

Admin July 26, 2011 at 8:47 pm

Elle,

When you start TinyUmbrella, go in Advanced and make sure “Set hosts to Cydia on exit” is checked. Then exit TinyUmbrella, and try restoring using iTunes.

GOAD July 26, 2011 at 9:36 pm

OK
NOW I DID IT ALL FROM THE BEGINNING AND GOT NEW PROBLEM I DON’T SEE THE “ACCEPT” SCREEN OF THE GEVEY
AND IT SAYS “NO SIGNAL”
WHAT TO DO
THANKS

Admin July 26, 2011 at 11:06 pm

GOAD,

Try a Network Reset from Settings and then see if the Welcome menu shows up! If you’ve already tried network reset, try hard reset by pressing home + power button for 10 seconds.

STILL CANT UNLOCK IT GUYS (IPHONE 4 4.3.4)
PLEASE REVIEW MY STEPS MAYBE I MISSING SOMETHING
STEP 1: Turn off your iPhone 4 and insert your SIM card and Gevey SIM together with the metal SIM tray provided.

STEP 2: Turn on your iPhone 4 and wait for the SIM welcome menu to show and the select “accept”.

STEP 3: At the beginning a “no service” message will show on your iPhone 4. DON’T do anything and wait until you see one signal bar appear on the top left corner.

STEP 4: After you see the signal bar dial “112″ and hang up within 2 seconds.

STEP 5: Turn on “Airplane Mood”. Wait about 40 seconds until the “No Sim Card Installed” message shows up, turn off the “Airplane Mood”. The “Sim failure” message will show and the signal will show up after a few seconds.

3G MUST BE OFF RIGHT?

GOAD,

I suggest you update to 4.3.5 or go back to 4.3.3 and try if GEVEY works on that fw. If not, there might be some problem with your GEVEY sim.

i tried go back to 4.3.3 but keep getting the damm 3194 error
if i change to 4.3.5 will i be able to downgrade it to 4.3.4?
thank you

Reply

Admin July 28, 2011 at 7:32 am

For Error 3194, you need to edit Hosts file to add “74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com” without quotes. Then try restore with iTunes again.

You can go back to 4.3.4 if you save SHSH blobs, but 4.3.5 is also jailbreakable (tethered) using redsn0w.

Hi, how can I activate the phone after the iOS upgrade (via RedSn0w) with iOS 4.3.4 BB 4.10.01? I’m stuck up to DIAL EMERGENCY NUMBER and when connected to iTunes it says SIM Card is not supported.

Any idea?

Reply

Admin August 4, 2011 at 9:47 am

Rex,

You’ll need original sim card to activate your locked iPhone. If your iPhone is locked with AT&T network, you’ll need AT&T’s micro sim to activate your iPhone.

I’m having a problem when I get the error 1. I select “Install Cydia” and the multitasking one, and when It starts getting to the white text on the screen it says “Initialization failed due to mismatch” and then it just goes back to the Itunes logo with the cable, and I cannot get it to exit recovery even with tiny umbrella.

Any help would be appreciated 🙂

“Please wait

Please wait”

Until it just turns off. I am not sure what to do. I have tried multiple USB ports, and rebooted. 🙁
