Earlier today, iPhone Dev team released redsn0w to provide untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1. But if you rely on ultrasn0w or Gevey unlock, you shouldn’t directly update to factory iOS. Instead you must use redsn0w or sn0wbreeze to build custom firmware. This custom firmware preserves the baseband so you can unlock iOS 5.0.1 with ultrasn0w or Gevey unlock. You might also want to check the video demo of Gevey running on iOS 5.0.1.
@iH8sn0w has not yet released updated sn0wbreeze to support untethered exploit for iOS 5.0.1. Below is a tutorial which shows how you can preserve baseband & create custom iOS 5.0.1 using redsn0w 0.9.10b1.
How To Preserve Baseband & Create Custom iOS 5.0.1 using Redsn0w 0.9.10?
This tutorial is for both Windows & Mac
2. Download redsn0w:
3. Launch redsn0w & click Extras
2. Then click Custom IPSW
3. Point redsn0w 0.9.10b1 to iOS 5.0.1 IPSW of your iDevice (For this tutorial I have used iPhone 4’s IPSW)
4. After you select iOS 5.0.1 IPSW, redsn0w will patch the IPSW file
5. Within a couple of minutes, redsn0w will patch iOS 5.0.1 IPSW & save the custom iOS 5.0.1 in the same folder where your original IPSW is saved. This custom IPSW will preserve the baseband so you can use ultrasn0w or Gevey unlock with iOS 5.0.1.
The name of custom iOS 5.0.1 created via redsn0w starts with “NO_BB…”
Be careful.
6. Click Ok & then you’ll see the “Extras” screen again. Now this time, click Pwned DFU. Pwned DFU helps to restore your iPhone to custom firmwares
7. Now, redsn0w will show you instructions to put your iPhone into Pwned DFU mode. Follow these instructions
8. Once your iPhone is in Pwned DFU mode (black screen), open iTunes & select shift + restore. Point to custom iOS 5.0.1 created by redsn0w. iTunes will verify and restore your iPhone to iOS 5.0.1.
This custom IPSW is not jailbroken by default. If you want to jailbreak your custom iOS 5.0.1, check the redsn0w tutorial to untether + jailbreak iOS 5.0.1.

The 1 signal bar issue is because of 02.10.04 baseband. But don’t worry, it’s just a cosmetic issue. It doesn’t affect iPhone signal strength.

I am currently having LOTS of problems with my signal as I only get signal out in the street and no signal in closed areas (such as my house, restaurants, shops, etc). Yes you can unlock iPhone 4 using Gevey without jailbreaking. And the same Gevey works on multiple iPhones.

You cannot update to 4.2.1 unless you’ve saved SHSH blobs of 4.2.1. If you don’t have saved SHSH blobs, you need to update to iOS 5.0.1.

You need the original sim card to activate the iPhone after restore. If you don’t have original sim card, I suggest you use hacktivate option in sn0wbreeze 2.9.

Have you downloaded the proper firmware for your iPhone 4. Make sure you download proper version (GSM/CDMA).

You can backup all your information using iTunes prior to the restore. After restore is complete, you can restore your iPhone to the saved backup.
Hi, I did the exactly as you told me too but my iPhone 4 is not getting restored by iTunes. I just shows “Verifying restore with iTunes” and then gives me a 1602 error. I can’t even restore my old firmware back because it shows a 1 error. What do I do now? I have downloaded and built the proper iPhone 4 GSM firmware.
Remove the cable, restart your PC & then try again. If it doesn’t work, I suggest you to try the restore on another PC/Mac.
Hi, I unwittingly downloaded ISO 5.0.1 onto my jailbroken/unlocked iphone 3gs. Obviously my phone does not recognize my unauthorized sim and my phone is useless at the moment. Am I mistaken in thinking that my old baseband is now gone, and therefore I can not use this tutorial to preserve it?
If so, is there anyway around this, or somewhere I can download an older baseband and use that on my phone,

As you don’t have official carrier’s sim, I suggest you should use sn0wbreeze 2.9 to build a custom firmware; and while doing so, select “hacktivate” option under Expert mode.
Also, as your baseband is updated, you must now upgrade to the iPad baseband using redsn0w if you need the unlock.

But I do not have my original japanese sim card and cannot activate my phone, although I have the usual greeting message from gevey on start? Am I unlockable ? Is there any solution? Would jailbreak do the trick?

That must be because your baseband is 02.10.04. And don’t worry, that one signal bar is just cosmetic. Your iPhone has a good signal strength.

I think the IPSW is corrupt. Re-download and try again. Use a download manager like IDM so that it doesn’t get corrupt.

Is your Shift key in a working condition? Try the other Shift key. If you’re on Mac, you must press the Option key and then click restore.

Have you tried doing hard reset by pressing home + power buttons for 10 seconds?
And, as you’re on iOS 5.0.1, you must force pop the Gevey menu from Settings -> Phone -> SIM Applications.

I don’t see any reason why Gevey Ultra won’t work with 03.10.01. If you don’t want to take risks, save SHSH blobs of your current iOS 4.x.x & upgrade to iOS 5.0.1 & see if Gevey Ultra works.

I have an Iphone 4 and tried to use this. I updated to 5.0.1 and tried to use this service when the IPSW says it is “unable to parse IPSW.
