iH8sn0w has finally released sn0wbreeze 2.9 to support untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1. sn0wbreeze lets you preserve baseband and create a custom firmware so you can use Gevey or ultrasn0w unlock. The latest sn0wbreeze 2.9 supports untethered jailbreak for the following devices:

  • iPhone 3GS (Old + New Bootrom)
  • iPhone 4 (GSM/CDMA)
  • iPod Touch 3G/4
  • iPad 1

The latest sn0wbreze 2.9 supports untethered jailbreak for iOS 3.x.x, iOS 4.x.x & iOS 5.0.1. sn0wbreeze is only available for Windows. Mac users can use redsn0w to preserve baseband & create custom iOS 5.0.1 or PwnageTool.

iPhone Dev Team released redsn0w to untether + jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 & Chronic dev team has released Corona on Cydia to provide untethered jailbreak.

Note: Gevey sim works properly on iOS 5.0.1.

How To Preserve Baseband & Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 using sn0wbreeze 2.9?

Step 1: Download iOS 5.0.1 for your iPhone 3GS/4

Step 2: Download sn0wbreeze 2.9

Step 3: Launch sn0wbreeze 2.9 & dismiss the copyright notice

Step 4: Then click next. On this screen, click Browse & select iOS 5.0.1 IPSW file

sn0wbreeze 2.9 - Select IPSW file

Step 5: sn0wbreeze will then recognize the IPSW

Click Next arrow.

Step 6: Now you’ll see a list of modes

sn0wbreeze 2.9 modes

In sn0wbreeze 2.9, the following modes are present:

  • iFaith Mode: This mode lets you create custom firmware using SHSH blobs saved by iFaith or TinyUmbrella
  • Simple Mode: This mode jailbreaks and installs Cydia and other recommended stuff automatically. This mode is for users who just want to jailbreak their iDevice
  • Expert Mode: Besides installing Cydia, this mode gives more advanced options like custom boot logos, root partition size, etc. Expert mode also gives the option to “hacktivate”
  • Baseband Preservation Mode: This mode just preserves the baseband. It doesn’t install or jailbreak the iOS

All the above modes preserve baseband by default. Select the appropriate mode. For this tutorial, I have selected Expert Mode.

Step 7: Select General

sn0wbreeze Expert mode

Click Next arrow.

Step 8: Here you’ll see the option to “hacktivate”. Select it if you don’t have original carrier’s sim card. You can also install SSH by selecting Install SSH

iOS 5.0.1 hacktivate

Click Next arrow. Then you’ll see the option to add custom Cydia apps. You can download & add Cydia packages here. After you’re done, then again click the Next arrow to proceed.

Step 9: Now select Build IPSW & click Next arrow

Build custom iOS 5.0.1 IPSW using sn0wbreeze

After this, sn0wbreeze will start building custom iOS 5.0.1 firmware. Wait for a couple of minutes.

sn0wbreeze 2.9 - Build Custom IPSW

Step 10: After sn0wbreeze finishes creating custom iOS 5.0.1, it’ll save the IPSW on Desktop. The file name will be something like sn0wbreeze_iPhone_4-GSM-5.0.1-9A405.ipsw

Custom hacktivated iOS 5.0.1 using sn0wbreeze

And sn0wbreeze will show you the instructions to put your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad in Pwned DFU mode. Follow the instructions on the screen and your iDevice will be in Pwned DFU mode

Step 11: Open iTunes & press Shift + restore. Then browse for the custom iOS 5.0.1 IPSW & let iTunes do the magic

If you selected General or Expert mode, then Cydia will be installed on your homescreen after restore. Also, your baseband will be preserved and you can use Gevey sim or ultrasn0w to unlock your iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS.

Do you need to have TinyUmbrella TSS server running while doing these steps ? Just curious since I have not used Snowbreezed at all. Thanks in advance!

You must preserve the baseband if you want to upgrade to iOS 5.0.1 & still use Gevey.

hey can i install siri on my iphone 4 ??can i update it to 5.0.1…??the unlock for 5.0.1 is available ??

You can install Spire on your iPhone 4. It’s the legal mod for non iPhone 4S devices. You can upgrade to iOS 5.0.1 but if you rely on unlock you must use sn0wbreeze 2.9 or redsn0w; and then you can unlock via Gevey.

I followed the instruction and all worked great! Including my gevey sim is working. But I’m facing a big problem. Everytime I reboot, I’m stuck at the apple logo. It won’t log into the phone. How to solve this? It seem i getting tethered jailbreak instead of untethered.

Which version of sn0wbreeze did you use?

v.2.9.1. any idea?

Mahesh Kukreja February 7, 2012 at 11:04 am

That shouldn’t give any problem as fat as I know. Are you restoring to iOS 5.0.1 or iOS 5.0?

Yes you can use sn0wbreeze to preserve baseband and upgrade to iOS 5.0.1. If you don’t have original carrier’s sim, you must select “hacktivate” option under Expert menu in sn0wbreeze.

Reply

Mahesh Kukreja February 21, 2012 at 5:07 pm

I have updated my phone to 5.0.1. i am using gevey sim. after updating with snowbreeze i am getting only one signal bar. how to fix this problem.

Reply

Mahesh Kukreja February 27, 2012 at 9:02 pm

The one signal bar is only cosmetic & is due to 02.10.01 baseband. You can fix it by installing the latest ultrasn0w from Cydia.

After installing ultrasnow my battery draining very fast almost 30 to 40% overnight. Is there any alternate option to fix this problem
