There’s a good news for Apple iOS users who rely on jailbreak for their iPod Touch, iPhone & iPad. Chronic Dev Team member, @pod2g recently tweeted a video showing iOS 5 untethered jailbreak in action.

Apple released iOS 5 to the public about 2 months back in October. There have been 8 beta versions & one GM version of iOS 5 since June this year. Members of both iOS hacker teams, the iPhone Dev team & Chronic Dev Team have been working for the jailbreak since first beta release of iOS 5. iOS 5 currently has a tethered jailbreak. But it’s a good news that untethered jailbreak will be released soon.
Apple also released iOS 5.0.1 to fix battery issues. Jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 is also currently tethered. Apple has fixed Charlie Miller‘s security exploit in iOS 5.0.1. There were rumors that the same exploit discovered by Charlie will be used for iOS 5’s untethered jailbreak. This meant that there would be no untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 in the near future.
But @pod2g, when asked by Stefan Esser, tweeted that he has used a different exploit for cooking an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5. And he also stated that the same exploit will be ported to iOS 5.0.1. This means that iOS 5.0.1 will also be getting an untethered jailbreak soon. So those of you who updated to iOS 5.0.1 to fix battery issues can relax now. Untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 is coming soon.
There is no ETA yet on release of untethered jailbreak to the public. There might be two possibilities:
1. Apple released iOS 5.1 beta at the end of November. So @pod2g might be waiting for the public release of iOS 5.1. This is because there is a possibility that the same exploit could work with iOS 5.1 also, giving untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1
2. Or, @pod2g might release the untethered jailbreak once he finishes porting the exploit to iOS 5.0.1. If this is the case, the jailbreak is very near
Also, currently @pod2g is just working to provide untethered jailbreak for Apple iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch & iPad 1. He’ll start exploiting iPad 2 & iPhone 4S after the jailbreak for older devices is prepared. Remember, iPad 2 & iPhone 4S have A5 CPU, so the hackers have to work hard to find exploits in the new CPU.
Stay tuned for more updates about iOS 5.0, 5.0.1 & 5.1 jailbreak news.
