Sunday us surely a Funday! iPhone Dev Team has released updated versions of PwnageTool and Redsn0w which give untethered jailbreak for iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad 1 on iOS 4.3.1. The release also jailbreaks Apple TV on iOS 4.3.1. But iPad 2 is not supported yet. Comex is still working on a solution to bring untethered jailbreak to iPad 2 on iOS 4.3.1.
PwnageTool 4.3 is only available for MAC, while Redsn0w 0.9.6rc9 is available for MAC and Windows.
The 4.3.1 untether exploit comes courtesy of Stefan Esser (@i0n1c on twitter), a security researcher based in Germany. Stefan has a long history of vulnerability research, and ironically his first contribution to the iPhone jailbreak community was improved security — last year he beat Apple to the punch and implemented ASLR for jailbroken iPhones with his “antid0te” framework. We’re happy to see that Stefan then turned his iPhone attention over to an untethered jailbreak exploit!
PwnageTool and Redsn0w support untether for the following devices on iOS 4.3.1:
- iPhone3GS
- iPhone4 (GSM)
- iPod Touch 3G
- iPod Touch 4G
- iPad 1
- AppleTV 2G (PwnageTool only for now)
The reason for iPad 2 not being supported is that the Hackers have not yet found a low-level exploit in the kernel. With the release of iOS 4.3.1, Apple patched certain vulnerabilities which were to be exploited by the Dev-Team.
ultrasn0w unlockers are advised to stay away from iOS 4.3.1 yet. There are certain incompatibilities when FW 4.3.1 is used on the older basebands supported by ultrasn0w. Don’t ever try to restore or update to a stock IPSW, or you’ll lose the unlock! When the updated ultrans0w is released, you can make custom FW via PwnageTool or Sn0wbreeze and flash your iPhone.
